Tewkesbury Park Hotel is a contemporary country house hotel with a very modern feel. Set within 176 acres of rolling parkland in the Cotswolds, this family-run 18th-century house is framed by an 18-hole championship golf course on land that once witnessed the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury. Today, it’s a place for relaxation and indulgence, whether you’re travelling with children, a partner, or your dog. Golf-lovers will love the proximity to the golf course as it’s literally on your door step, making it perfect for couples wanting a golf/spa experience.

Bedrooms are carefully thought out, with a choice between historic suites and modern rooms (the historic suites have the best views). The suites have the sort of details I always notice – modern bathrooms with freestanding roll-top baths (some with TVs), Nespresso machines, hot water bottles, and those all-important bathrobes and slippers. Contemporary rooms offer a panoramic view of the Malvern Hills, complete with private terraces to maximise the experience.

The spa sits in a separate building, so it feels like a retreat in itself. I didn’t get to try the spa as it was fully booked at the time so it’s worth booking treatments in advance, as the menu is extensive and very popular. For dining, the Mint restaurant is a highlight. The chef Anuj Thaku’s background brings a touch of spice to the menu, with authentic curries alongside a seasonal six-course tasting menu. Expect dishes such as Winchcombe venison or curried parsnip and apple velouté, always beautifully presented and full of flavour.

After a day exploring Tewkesbury Abbey, browsing Cheltenham’s shops (shopaholics should know that this could be a full day!), or a flutter at Cheltenham Racecourse, the hotel’s blue and gold sitting rooms are the perfect spot to sink into a chair with a gin and tonic. With so many thoughtful touches – from wellies in every size, hot water bottles in the rooms, to locally sourced ingredients in the kitchen, the hotel strikes just the right balance between modern luxury and laid-back comfort.

Though it’s lacking a little in romance, Tewkesbury Park is one of those hotels that works for everyone, making it a great choice for a country house hotel break in the Cotswolds.

Would I Return?

Yes, for a short spa break and to enjoy the delicious food. One of Britain’s Finest.

Best for: Families or couples looking for a golf/spa option
