Lisbon has some wonderful places to stay and there are plenty of hotels to entice locals, discerning travellers and every budget. One of the trendiest areas to emerge in recent years is Intendente. It has a buzzing atmosphere and plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants to choose from. It’s also now home to 1908 Lisboa Hotel, a contemporary boutique hotel with restaurant and bar, which has a constantly evolving art gallery.

2017 saw the opening of AVANI Avenida Liberdade Lisbon Hotel, a contemporary oasis in the heart of the city. As well as the state-of-the-art gym, it’s close to many of Lisbon’s top attractions and has scenic views across the city.

For something small, but strikingly beautiful, the 42 room Memmo Alfama fits the bill. More Miami than Lisbon this hip hideaway in Lisbon’s oldest district, is the perfect boutique hotel for the jet-set crowd with its red rooftop plunge pool and bar.

High up on one of the seven hills is the 11 suite boutique hotel Palacio Belmonte, one of Christian Louboutin's all-time favourite luxury hotels and if budget is no object and you love all things beautiful then this is the place for you. Authentic, luxurious and simply stunning, there’s no other boutique hotel like it in Lisbon. The oldest building of its kind in the city Palacio Belmonte is home to a stunning black slate pool. Tucked inside the ramparts of the Castelo de São Jorge, behind striking red wooden doors along an uneven cobbled passage, you’ll feel like you’re entering your very own private palazzo. A favourite with fashionistas, celebrities and those in the know Palacio Belmonte is one of Lisbon's best-kept boutique hotel secrets.

NEW LUXURY HOTELS IN LISBON

Once upon a time The One Palácio da Anunciada was a library, with close to twenty thousand books, and a museum with works of art by Correggio, Rubens and Ticiano to name a few. A few metres from the prestigious Avenida da Liberdade and Praça dos Restauradoreshe the palace dates back to 1533 and is now a luxury 83 room, five suite hotel owned by the Spanish H10 Hotels.

The 5 star hotel’s restaurant which serves Portuguese cuisine with a Mediterranean influence, is located in one of the grand halls with impressive ceilings and direct access onto the gardens which are home to a swimming pool and spa.

Each of the 56 rooms at the atmospheric Vintage Hotel & Spa is different, telling its own story through “rich colour palettes, expressive artworks, and clean modern lines”. Though relative small for a city hotel this cool hangout has a spa, indoor pool, rooftopbar and Portuguese restaurant focusing on locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

After a two-year renovation, Bairro Alto Hotel reopened in August 2019. Set in an 18th-century building that was once the famous Grand Hotel de L’Europe, the hotel doubled its size, including signature suites on the top floor. In addition to a rooftop bar offering an amazing view of the River Tejo, the hotel has a restaurant and a wellness centre with sauna and a gym.

Raw Culture Bairro Alto offers a trendy cultural experience in an old property set in the historic neighbourhood of Bairro Alto, known for its fado houses and many bars and cafés. Once a printing house the building is now home to 13 lofts each uniquely decorated with the owner’s private art collection and featuring a kitchenette and private en-suite bathroom. Bringing together architecture, art and design Raw Culture Bairro Alto has brought a new concept of boutique hotel allowing you to enjoy a unique sophisticated cultural experience. An ideal choice if you’re someone who can't live apart from character, style and creative energy. A delicious breakfast is included in the rate.
