New Hotel Opening

JNcQUOI House: Lisbon's most sociable brand opens its first hotel on the Avenida

Sixteen suites in a 19th-century townhouse on Avenida da Liberdade, designed by Vincent Van Duysen, with a ten-seat seafood counter, a bar lined with old mirrors and the keys to Lisbon's smartest members' club for as long as you stay.

JNcQUOI House, Lisbon, Portugal

Anyone who has spent an evening on Avenida da Liberdade in the past few years will know JNcQUOI, even if they have struggled to pronounce it (it is a play on je ne sais quoi). The restaurant that started it all, JNcQUOI Avenida, occupies the soaring hall of a former theatre and keeps a life-size dinosaur skeleton in a glass case above the diners, and it has been the place where Lisbon's fashion, money and politics come to be seen since it opened in 2017. Since then the brand has grown into an Asian restaurant, a deli, a cabaret supper club called Frou Frou, a beach club and villas in Comporta, and a private members' club on a balcony overlooking the Avenida. This October it adds the piece that was always missing: a hotel.

The people behind it

JNcQUOI belongs to the Amorim Luxury group, run by Paula Amorim, of the cork-exporting Amorim family, and her husband Miguel Guedes de Sousa. He spent much of his career running Aman resorts, and his grandfather built the Four Seasons Ritz in Lisbon, so hotels are very much in the blood. That pedigree matters, because restaurant brands that move into hotels often treat the bedrooms as an afterthought. Here the bedrooms are the point.

The road to opening has not been smooth. A fire in the building in the summer of 2024 halted work and forced a major rebuild, and the opening date has slipped more than once since. October, at last, appears to be the month.

Van Duysen on the Avenida

The Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen, who also designed the JNcQUOI villas in Comporta and the Fashion Clinic boutiques, has reworked a 19th-century townhouse over four floors. Van Duysen is known for a quiet, almost monastic restraint, all limestone, oak and soft light, and here he has warmed it up for the city with dark marble, wood panelling, antique mirrors and touches of emerald green that nod to classic Portuguese interiors. There are just 16 rooms, all called Grand Suites and laid out more like private apartments than hotel rooms, with stone bathrooms and, in the best of them, views over the plane trees of the Avenida.

Seafood, a counter for ten and a mirrored bar

The food has been handed to chef Filipe Carvalho, and it is built around the Atlantic. JNcQUOI Fish is the main restaurant, there is a seafood terrace that reworks one of Lisbon's old kiosks for eating outside, and JNcQUOI Table is a ten-seat counter for a tasting menu that the brand describes as Michelin-recognised. A counter of ten in a hotel of sixteen suites will be one of the most sought-after reservations in Lisbon, and I would book it before booking the room. Downstairs, the Mirror Room is a bar lined with old glass, with a cocktail list to match.

A home with a butler

The promise here is service on demand, summed up in the hotel's own line: you ask, they deliver. There is a butler on call around the clock, a small gym, and, best of all, membership of the JNcQUOI Club for the length of your stay, which means a seat on the balcony above the Avenida with the city's well-connected crowd. For anyone who has wondered what it would be like to live in Lisbon rather than visit it, that is about as close as a hotel can get you.

Who will love it

JNcQUOI House will suit travellers who care as much about where they eat and drink as where they sleep, and who want to be in the thick of Lisbon's social life rather than tucked away in a quiet corner of Lapa or Alfama. Couples and small groups will love the scale. Those who prefer anonymity should note that, with sixteen suites and a brand built on being seen, discretion may not be the house speciality. Rates have not yet been published, but expect them to sit at the top of the Lisbon market.
