Lady Jane Grey Suite at Boringdon Hall

Lady Jane Suite at Boringdon Hall Hotel and Spa

Boringdon Hall sits on the edge of Dartmoor, wrapped in centuries of history, yet it never feels formal or intimidating. The 16th-century manor house has been restored with real sensitivity, keeping its character intact while bringing in the sort of comfort you want from a luxury hotel. Arrival feels warm from the outset. There are smiles at reception, peach lemonade pressed into your hand, and a sense that the team genuinely enjoy looking after people. Bradley, who took care of me during my stay, struck exactly the right balance. Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without ever becoming overbearing. The sort of service that makes you feel like an individual rather than a room number.

Rooms range from suites in the main house to contemporary spa suites beside Gaia Spa. I stayed in the Lady Jane Suite, which felt wonderfully generous in size, with a separate sitting room stocked with proper tea, coffee and enough bottled water to avoid those awkward requests for extras. Upstairs, the bathroom is enormous. Twin basins, an oversized walk-in shower, thick towels piled high and, importantly, plenty of flannels. The freestanding bath beside the window was made for long evenings and a second glass of wine.

Gaia Spa has built a strong reputation and deservedly so. It’s large enough to spend an entire day in without feeling restless. There’s a sizeable indoor pool you genuinely want to swim lengths in, a well-equipped gym, steam room and sauna, alongside a healthy dining space for lighter lunches between treatments. The atmosphere is calm without tipping into the overly hushed spa clichés so many luxury hotels fall into. You settle into it quickly. Hours disappear there rather easily.

The standout treatment is the GAIA Awakening Journey. It begins with a full-body salt-and-oil scrub, then moves into a deeply restorative massage tailored to exactly what your body needs that day. The extra-wide heated treatment bed makes an enormous difference. Small details like this separate good spas from memorable ones. Jasmin, my therapist, was excellent. Instinctive, experienced and clearly passionate about what she does. Afterwards, herbal tea in the relaxation room felt less like an add-on and more like part of the cocooning ritual.

Dinner at Àclèaf was one of the highlights of the stay. Head Chef Scott Paton’s cooking is ambitious yet grounded, technical without ever losing warmth or flavour. You choose four courses from a menu built around the seasons and local produce, and every plate arrives looking like a work of art without feeling contrived. The dining room team are polished and knowledgeable in the old-school sense. Confident, discreet and deeply familiar with every detail of the menu.

The bread course alone tells you a great deal about the kitchen. Warm pain de campagne and oat-and-honey bread arrive in an oak-leaf basket, topped with cultured butter and goat’s butter, and garnished with honey and grated chestnut. It is one of those small moments you remember afterwards.

The white crab from Brixham Harbour, shaped to resemble a sea urchin, was extraordinary. Visually striking, yes, but also full of freshness and delicacy. The black pudding beignet with spiced apple gel balanced richness beautifully, while the langoustine jelly with tomato consommé showed real precision and restraint. Scott Paton cooks with confidence. Nothing feels overworked or included purely for the sake of theatre or show.

What Boringdon Hall does particularly well is consistency. The rooms and suites are spacious, the spa works as a genuine destination rather than an afterthought, and the food at Àclèaf easily competes with some of the best dining rooms in the South West. Yet what stays with you most are the people. Bradley, Jasmin and the wider team create the sort of atmosphere that makes you relax into your stay almost immediately. By the time you leave, you are already thinking about when you might return and that won’t be soon enough.

Who for? Couples for a spa break or solo travellers looking to escape.
